Blurred Middle Hidden Lower

Year — 2026Category — Publication

Blurred Middle, Hidden Lower is a research led editorial zine examining the erosion of class boundaries within contemporary urban life. Framed through the tension between the "blurred middle" and the "hidden lower," the project interrogates how postmodernism, globalisation, and neoliberal systems reshape visibility, identity, and access.

Informed by Paola De Martin's essay "Breaking Class: Upward Climbers and the Swiss Nature of Design History" (2021), the zine translates theory into lived context through primary research. Interviews with residents and shopkeepers in Peckham ground the work in real perspectives on class mobility, social hierarchy, and exclusion within the design landscape.

The outcome is a layered visual narrative that exposes the invisibility of working class identities and the increasing polarisation across social strata. Through collage, archival references, and typographic intervention, the zine reflects on themes of gentrification, alienation, and designer capitalism, challenging how class is perceived, constructed, and sustained.
