Making Space

Year — 2023Category — Publication

This publication is an exploration of ideas and expressions that emerge at the intersection of creativity, care, and resistance. At its heart lies a collective vision—a symphony of voices united not by uniformity, but by a shared commitment to designing spaces, narratives, and experiences that center comfort as a radical act.

The chapters gathered here speak to the power of design as a form of dialogue from a range of different essays surrounding the core theme of comfort. But rather than isolated artistic statements, these works are part of a larger composition: a collaborative rhythm shaped by the identities, perceptions, and affinities of those involved. Each chapter within this publication holds its own tone and tempo, produced in response to a singular essay from modern-day creative thinkers and speakers—yet together they produce a harmony that transcends individual perspectives to create a collective vision.

Comfort is not framed here as passive or apolitical, but as something deeply intertwined with many aspects of our living and being. In a world where many are denied safety or softness, the creation of comfort becomes an act of resistance. It is within this tension—between unrest and rest, structure and improvisation—that the publication finds its core. The designers featured in this publication bring forward layered experiences across gender, race, class, and identity, informing how they create and who they create for. In doing so, they reject singular narratives in favour of multiplicity, nuance, and interdependence.

This is not a manifesto, nor a resolution. It is a moment of convergence—of design as care, protest as beauty, and community as both method and outcome. We invite you to listen, to feel, and to find your own place within this evolving collective composition.
